Βιογραφικό Σημείωμα

Νίκος Δ. Κοκκώνης, γεννήθηκε το 1941 στον Άγιο Βασίλειο της Αρκαδίας (Μαντινείας). Αρίστευσε απο το δημοτικό σχολείο του χωριού του μέχρι και το διδακτορικό του (Ph. D.) στην κλινική ψυχολογία στην Αμερική, όπου σπούδασε με υποτροφίες. Τελειώνοντας τις σπουδές του δεν επέστρεψε στην Ελλάδα, αλλά παρέμεινε εκεί, όπου τώρα εργάζεται  ως πανεπιστημιακός καθηγητής.

Ο Δρ Κοκκώνης διέπρεψε, μα δεν εξαντλήθηκε, μέσα σ’ έναν απέραντο κόσμο επιστημονικής, επαγγελματικής και κοινωνικής δράσης. Για τρείς δεκαετίες έδωσε αναρίθμητες φιλολογικές ομιλίες και επαγγελματικές διαλέξεις, φέρνοντας έτσι πιο κοντά στο κοινό τον πλούσιο κόσμο της ψυχολογίας, και για δεκαοχτώ συνεχή χρόνια ήταν αρθρογράφος για την εφημερίδα Ελληνικός Τύπος του Σικάγου. Η προσφορά του ως επαγγελματία κλινικού ψυχολόγου, το διδακτικό του έργο ως χαρισματικού καθηγητή και ο εθελοντισμός του έχουν αποτιμηθεί απο έγκριτους φορείς ως μια εξαιρετική συμβολή στην παραπέρα προώθηση της ψυχολογίας, της παιδείας και της ψυχικής υγείας των ανθρώπων και του έχουν χαρίσει πολλές τιμές και διακρίσεις (American Hellenic Who’s Who, Outstanding New Citizen of the Υear, Who’s Who in the Midwest, Notable Americans, κλπ).

Έγινε profiled σέ πολλά μέσα μαζικής πληροφόρησης, συμπεριλαμβανομένου του Chicago Sun-Times, του Εθνικού Κήρυκα, του περιοδικών ΕΛΛΑΣ, GREEK CIRCLE και ΕΣΕΙΣ και της Εγκυκλοπαίδειας της Σύγχρονης Ελληνικής Λογοτεχνίας (1971). Είναι μέλος του American Philological Association, της Midland Society of Authors, της Ένωσης Αρκάδων Συγγραφέων και της Διεθνούς Εταιρείας Ελλήνων Λογοτεχνών, η οποία και τον τίμησε με Α’ Βραβείο  Ομήρου και Χρυσό Μετάλλιο για το παρόν μυθιστόρημά του. Απόκτημα της παγκόσμιας λογοτεχνίας, το έργο αυτό (με αγγλικό τίτλο Arcadia, My Arcadia) αποθεώθηκε απο την παγκόσμια κριτική και είναι υπό συζήτηση για κινηματογραφική ταινία.

Ο Νίκος Κοκκώνης και η σύζυγός του Πόπη (το γένος Τορολοπούλου) είναι οι ευτυχείς γονείς τριών θυγατέρων (με μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές) και έχουν την τύχη να καλούνται «παππούς» και «γιαγιά» από εννέα εγγόνια. Από το 2000 επισκέπτονται κάθε χρόνο την Ελλάδα, όπου παραμένουν τους καλοκαιρινούς μήνες.

                                                                   Brief Bio

Nicholas D. Kokonis, Ph.D. (Psychology) was born and raised in Arcadia, , and migrated to the in pursuit of his studies in 1962.

Dr. Kokonis excelled in his studies, from kindergarten to his last class of graduate work. With a scholarship and a teaching assistantship, he completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Illinois Institute of Technology within two years, after earning his B.A. and M.A. at Roosevelt University, also on academic scholarships.

In addition to his clinical expertise, he is a charismatic college professor whose teaching career has been profiled in collegiate journals and has earned him the admiration of thousands of students.  He claims that his teaching career started when, at the age of seven, he was asked by his village school teacher to take over the Kindergarten class because of a teacher having called in sick!

Nicholas Kokonis is the recipient of many awards and honors. They include Who's Who, Outstanding Citizen of the Year, Notable Americans, a profile in the Chicago Sun Times, American Hellenic Who's Who, a reference in the Encyclopedia of Modern Greek Literature (Poetry) and feature articles in National Herald, ESEIS, ELLINIKI GNOMI (in Germany) and other publications.

He is a member of many literary societies, including: the Midland Society of Authors, the International Society of Greek Writers, the American Philological Society, the Hellenic Literary Society (the oldest in ) and the Arcadian Literary Society. On March 6, he was an invited guest on the Newsmakers Comcast television program. On April 24-26, 2007, Roosevelt University showcased his book Arcadia, My Arcadia for the second time in its Faculty and Alumni Writers Book Fair, in addition to profiling him in their summer issue of the Alumni Magazine.

Foreign languages, the study of the history of cinema, cultural history, Byzantine chanting and creative writing are avid interests of Dr. Kokonis. He is a published poet and wrote a column for the Greek Press for eighteen years.

On November 13, 2007, Dr. Kokonis has been invited to be a guest at the ERT Studios in Athens for an interview that will be shown on satellite all over the world (the date/time has not been programmed yet).

On November 27, 2007,  at  7:30 pm, Arcadia, My Arcadia and its Greek edition ELLADA MOY, PATRIDA MOY, will be bestowed another honor: they will be presented at PARNASSOS, ’s oldest literary society, by a panel of noted scholars.
